Good Riddance: Fly Trap Method

Our kitchen is always inundated by flies this time of year.  Having toddlers who leave little bits of food all over the kitchen table does not help.  But the kids have unintentionally helped me solve the problem!

Note: if you think food left out over night is gross, please feel free to stop reading now.

How To Trap Flies in 6 Easy Steps:
  1. Offer raw milk to toddler.
  2. Don't notice when toddler leaves an inch of milk in his cup and leaves to do something else.
  3. Accidentally leave cup with milk out all night.
  4. Find cup in the morning.
  5. Notice 3 flies stuck in the cream on top of the milk (wow! kind of cool!)
  6. Wash flies down drain.
Okay, this is probably not the best way to take care of flies.  Do you have a natural alternative that doesn't involve curdling milk or ugly fly strips hanging from the ceiling?

  1. For fruit flies, I take a jar put some old fruit in the botton, create a funnel with a piece of paper at the top to a small opening at the bottom. They crawl done and in the jar and can't figure out how to get out. I put it in the freezer for a couple hours every so often to kill the ones it catches. Works very well.

I've got fly strips hanging in my kitchen - gross but necessary on a farm!

  3. Sounds like all natural fly elimination to me! Maybe you should market your idea?

  4. I put a piece of banana in the bottom of a bowl, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and poke a few small holes in it. Fruit flies will get in but can't find the way out. This works really well!

  5. Andy, that sounds like a good idea (and slightly less gross than my milk method).

Liberty, the fly strips just haven't worked very well for us. They are great for fruit flies, but not for normal flies...maybe they are too smart for 'em!

Amanda, what would I call my new invention? The sour milk trap? Ewww... :)
